Went to Palm Springs for Christmas and saw some great signs along the way.
While driving through the Mojave Desert I saw a sign in some property that was miles away from anything else: “Fish for Sale. Coy Fish”. Not Koi Fish, but Coy Fish!!?? What is a Coy Fish? Are they really shy? They keep their feelings to themselves? And what kind of people could claim they specialize in these fish and not know how to spell them? Would you buy a fish from them? And who is their target market? Do they expect people to be driving through the desert, in the middle of nowhere, and the people driving to look at each other and say “Honey, we need to get some Koi Fish, let’s stop here?”. I’d love to have gotten a picture of the sign and to really know the story behind their supposed business.
Another sign at the airport: “Calming Traffic Ahead”. What the hell does that mean? When was the last time you saw traffic that was calming? I can’t imagine what the sign means and especially to foreigners. It’s like the proverbial “Mind the Gap”, do we have to listen to or mind when the gap talks? What about, “Watch you step, big chasm ahead, don’t fall in”? I like it in London when on the streets they write “Look Left or Look Right“, it’s plain-speak and is meant for tourists who are used to traffic going the other way.
I saw so many other funny signs along the way and in the past years, but due to the onset of old age and hypoxia, I can’t for the life of me remember what they are! Oh well, another post for another day!
