Made it to Base Camp

Hey everybody, I’m Mitch’s son and I’ll be updating the blog on his behalf over the next few weeks. Sorry if it has taken a few days to approve all your comments; I’ve been doing them in batches.

Had a nice 10 minute conversation with him tonight, he sounds a little congested but still in good spirits and taking antibiotics for a minor cold (although something tells me nothing is really “minor” at 17,500 feet.) He says he has a great view of the Khumbu Icefall, and that it is “bloody cold” — I assume speaking in the Queen’s English is the first sign of the onset of altitude sickness.

Three casualties of the expedition so far: his Toughbook (screen has a 3″ square section which is permanently blue), his Kindle (screen broke after it was kneeled on), and one of his digital cameras, which is now only able to take photos which are completely white (not that you would be able to tell the difference from a normal Everest photo — ha ha.) The loss of the Kindle has him reading a borrowed paperback book, the horror!

The itinerary calls for a couple days of rest at Base Camp followed by a trek to Pumori Base Camp. Mitch thinks he might have some valuable internet time in the next few days, otherwise I will update as I hear from him.

    Hey Nick!
Thats hysterical! of course kneeling on his kindle with all of those books you and Jeremy advised him on must be killing him, coz all he had left was the book of Yeats poetry I gave him! Question is now who is going to carry the Shantaram to the summit for him? Have you seen the size of it?

  3. hey nick. have not seen you since you were very small/ lol tell mitch good luck mike moreland
