A few weeks ago, I was listening to my iPod on shuffle and a song came on that I had not heard before; Everest by Andy Stochansky. It got me thinking about creating a play list for the Everest Expedition about mountains and climbing. So during this holiday break when I had a few minutes, I Googled “songs about mountains” and found pretty much nothing. Just obvious songs like Rocky Mountain High and On Top of Old Smokey. I then set upon a quest to create my own list but I set some of my own arbitrary rules:

a) Must already own the song and be in iTunes
b) Be linked to mountains/climbing through the title, lyrics or song meaning
c) Not be about too negative (falling, death, despair etc.)
d) A song that I actually like or at least are willing to listen to on the climb
e) Should be generally motivational about teamwork, pursuing goals or overcoming challenges
In the end, I came up with 81 songs (yes that’s a lot!) – and though you might disagree with their inclusion, hey – it’s one person’s opinion. And they’re going to the mountain! They range over the past 45 years … So here goes – in alphabetical order, song title and artist:

Check out the song ‘Mt.’ by the Super Furry Animals in their album Dark Days/Light Years. It’s a funny song about climbing mountains. I think you will appreciate it!
Hi Alan, thank you for sending this, I had not heard it before. Great song and fun lyrics, much appreciated!
Hi Mitch
I have four songs to add to the list…
1. THE CLIMB- Miley Cyrus
(So i would never have pictured myself buying a Miley Cyrus song, but we sang this in my choir a few months ago so I had to download it, and there were times I literally could not get through it because of the emotion welling up inside me. Message: it’s the journey itself that matters most
2. UNWRITTEN – Natasha Bedingfield
)
(this song was another choir pick, so I had to download it, as well. And, again so powerful to sing with 40 people in a kind of “ministering” setting, the whole congregation was on their feet clapping & singing along to this Anthem about how our lives are works in progress, and how much living is left to do!! So cast the rules aside, and Carpe Diem
3. THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD – The Beatles
(For me, this song is about a person having a conversation with the Universe and Self, as a part of the one energy of the Universe. The “Door’ represents Purpose, “Standing/Waiting here” symbolizes an Unknowing, or a Disconnect from our true voice, and “Lead Me” is the INSPIRATION!!
If they were on my itunes, I would have added:
[Lord] YOU GAVE ME A MOUNTAIN – Elvis Presley
and
CLIMB EVERY MOUNTAIN – From “The Sound of Music”
Someday, after I have conquered climbing an ACTUAL Mountain, I think I will write a song about the mountain itself…and let the listener find their own symbolism, and interpretation…won’t that be fun?
Hard Sun – Eddie Vedder
